We completed the transport of a self-propelled drilling rig as part of a time-critical project logistics operation involving multimodal execution across Northern Europe
Cargo particulars and task
1 × Atlas Copco Flexiroc T15R-01
Dimensions: 4.95 × 1.77 × 2.26 m, weight: 3.6 tonnes
This type of equipment requires careful planning due to mobility constraints, loading procedures and weather sensitivity.
Route and solution
The transport was executed using a combination of road and sea freight:
- Collection in Lappeenranta, Finland
- Road transport to Port of Kotka
- Ro-Ro ferry shipment from Kotka to Tilbury, UK
- Final delivery by road transport to Wales
This multimodal setup ensured the fastest possible delivery while maintaining full control over handling and timing.
Project logistics execution
This shipment was handled as a project logistics solution, not a standard cargo movement.
Our scope included:
- Immediate mobilisation of transport equipment in Finland
- Coordination of port operations in Kotka
- Ferry booking and scheduling optimisation
- Final delivery planning in the UK
Strong local presence in Finland allowed us to collect the cargo within 24 hours of confirmation.
Key challenges

Urgent timeline
The shipment required execution in the shortest possible timeframe. Fast reaction and local availability of transport assets were critical.
Extreme weather conditions
Temperatures dropped to approximately -20°C, which affected the unit’s battery performance. A jump-start procedure was required to enable loading onto the vessel.
Result
- Collection arranged within 24 hours
- Fast routing via Kotka and Tilbury
- Successful loading despite cold weather conditions
- On-time delivery to Wales without delays
Project logistics for heavy machinery transport
Transport of self-propelled equipment such as drilling rigs requires a combination of:
- engineering awareness
- flexible routing
- fast operational response
This project demonstrates our capability to deliver heavy machinery transport and project logistics solutions across the UK and Europe, even under time pressure and challenging environmental conditions.
